The story of Zechariah

A long time ago, there was a prophet named Zechariah. He lived during a time when the people of Israel were returning from exile in Babylon and were trying to rebuild the city of Jerusalem and the temple. God sent Zechariah to encourage the people and give them visions of hope for the future.

1. Zechariah’s Call to Return to God

At the beginning of his ministry, Zechariah called the people to return to God with all their hearts. The people had turned away from God in the past, which led to their exile. Zechariah urged them to learn from their mistakes and follow God faithfully. God promised that if they returned to Him, He would bless them and be with them.

Lesson: When we turn back to God, He is always ready to forgive and bless us.

2. Visions of Encouragement and Hope

Zechariah had several visions that gave the people hope and encouragement as they rebuilt their city and the temple. These visions included images of a new Jerusalem filled with peace and prosperity, a high priest named Joshua who would lead the people spiritually, and a ruler who would come to save them. God was telling His people that He hadn’t forgotten about them and that great things were coming.

Lesson: Even when things seem difficult, God has a plan to bring hope and blessings in the future.

3. The Coming Messiah

One of the most important messages in the Book of Zechariah is about the coming Messiah. Zechariah prophesied that a king would come to Jerusalem, riding on a donkey, bringing peace and salvation to the people. This prophecy pointed to Jesus, who would later fulfill it when He entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Zechariah also spoke of the Messiah being pierced, which foreshadowed Jesus’ death on the cross.

Lesson: God had a plan to send a Savior for His people, and that Savior is Jesus.

4. God’s Promises for the Future

Zechariah’s prophecies didn’t just focus on the present time but looked ahead to the future. He spoke of a time when God would defeat all the enemies of Israel and establish His kingdom on earth. The people were encouraged to keep working faithfully, knowing that God’s promises would be fulfilled.

Lesson: We can trust that God’s promises for the future will come true, no matter how long it takes.

5. Zechariah’s Call to Live Righteously

Throughout his ministry, Zechariah reminded the people that God wanted them to live righteous lives. He told them to show kindness, mercy, and justice to one another. Their relationship with God was not just about rebuilding the temple but about how they treated each other and followed God’s commands.

Lesson: God desires that we live lives of righteousness, showing love, kindness, and justice to others.

Key Lessons from Zechariah:

  • God is always ready to receive us when we turn back to Him.
  • Even in difficult times, God has a plan to bring hope and blessings.
  • The coming Messiah, Jesus, is central to God’s plan for salvation.
  • God’s promises for the future are certain, and we can trust Him.
  • Living righteously is important to God, and He calls us to show love and justice.

The Book of Zechariah teaches us that God’s plans for His people are full of hope and salvation. It reminds us that Jesus is the promised Messiah, and even when things seem hard, we can trust in God’s promises for the future. We are called to live lives that reflect His love and righteousness.
