The Book of Joel is a story about how God sends messages to His people to help them turn back to Him. It starts with something scary happening to the land, but it ends with a wonderful promise of hope and blessings from God.
Let’s go through the story and learn what God teaches us through the prophet Joel!
1. The Locust Invasion
One day, something terrible happened to the land of Israel. A huge swarm of locusts (little grasshopper-like insects) came and ate up all the plants and crops. The people had no food left, and everything looked dry and empty.
The locusts were like a warning from God. He wanted the people to understand that they needed to come back to Him. They had forgotten about God and were not following His ways. God allowed the locusts to come so the people would realize that they needed Him to protect them and provide for them.
Lesson: Sometimes hard things happen to get our attention. God wants us to remember Him and turn back to Him when we have wandered away.
2. Joel’s Message: Turn Back to God
God sent Joel, a prophet, to tell the people what they needed to do. Joel told everyone, “Come back to God with all your heart!” He said they should fast (stop eating for a while to focus on prayer), cry out to God, and say sorry for their wrong choices.
Joel reminded them that God is kind and loving. He would forgive them if they were truly sorry and wanted to change. Joel called everyone, even the priests, to pray and ask God for help.
Lesson: When we make mistakes, we should turn back to God with our whole hearts. He is always ready to forgive us when we are truly sorry.
3. The Day of the Lord
Joel also spoke about something important called the Day of the Lord. This was a time when God would come to judge the world. Joel said that on that day, people who had been disobeying God would face punishment, but those who loved and followed God would be safe.
He warned the people that they needed to be ready for this day by staying close to God and following His ways. But Joel also promised that if the people turned back to God, He would protect them and bless them.
Lesson: God wants us to be ready for the future by loving Him and following His ways. When we stay close to God, we don’t need to be afraid because He will protect us.
4. A Promise of Blessing
After Joel warned the people, he gave them a message of hope. He said that if they turned back to God, He would restore everything that was lost. God promised to make the land beautiful again, with plenty of food and water. He would send rain, and the crops would grow.
Even more amazing, Joel said that God would pour out His Holy Spirit on all the people! This meant that everyone who loved God—young and old, men and women—would be filled with God’s Spirit and have a close relationship with Him.
Lesson: When we turn back to God, He not only forgives us, but He blesses us with good things and fills us with His Spirit. God loves to give us good gifts when we follow Him.
5. God’s Faithfulness
At the end of the book, Joel talks about how God will take care of His people. He promises that no matter what hard things happen in the future, God’s people will be safe with Him. God will defeat all the enemies of His people, and He will be with them forever.
This shows us that God is faithful (always keeps His promises). He never forgets His people, and He is always there to help them.
Lesson: God is always faithful. He keeps His promises and will always take care of us when we trust in Him.
