Esther: Courage for Such a Time as This

Scripture: Book of Esther

Introduction: The story of Esther is an extraordinary account of courage, faith, and divine purpose. Esther was a young Jewish woman who became queen in a foreign land. Her journey led her to a defining moment where she had to choose between remaining silent for her safety or risking her life to save her people. In this story, we find inspiration to take a stand for faith and justice, even when the risks are high.

Today, we’ll explore how Esther’s courage and obedience to God’s call inspire us to stand boldly in our faith, especially in challenging times.

1. Recognizing God’s Purpose in Our Position
“And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14)

Esther’s position as queen wasn’t just a stroke of luck; it was part of God’s providential plan. Although Esther was initially hesitant to approach the king, her cousin Mordecai reminded her that she might have been placed in her position precisely for this moment. Esther’s role was not about personal glory but about being in the right place to serve a higher purpose.

Application: We may find ourselves in challenging situations or positions of influence that require us to take a stand. Sometimes, our purpose isn’t immediately clear, but like Esther, we must recognize that God can use us wherever we are to fulfill His will. Let’s ask ourselves: “Where has God placed me, and how can I make a difference for Him?”

2. Choosing Faith Over Fear
“Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: ‘Go, gather together all the Jews… Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do… If I perish, I perish.’” (Esther 4:15–16)

Esther’s choice to approach the king was a courageous act of faith. Going before him without being summoned could result in her death. Yet, with a humble heart, Esther chose to fast, pray, and trust in God’s strength rather than give in to fear. Her words, “If I perish, I perish,” reflect her unwavering faith.

Application: When we face situations where standing for truth or justice feels dangerous, it’s natural to feel fear. But God calls us to place our faith above our fears. Like Esther, we can rely on Him for courage and strength, knowing that our lives are ultimately in His hands. Faith over fear allows us to stand firm, trusting that God’s plan is greater than our immediate fears.

3. Taking a Stand for Righteousness
“So the king and Haman went to Queen Esther’s banquet… Queen Esther answered, ‘If I have found favor with you, Your Majesty… grant me my life—this is my petition. And spare my people—this is my request.’” (Esther 7:3)

At a pivotal moment, Esther revealed her Jewish heritage and pleaded for her people’s lives, exposing Haman’s plot to destroy them. Her courageous stand changed the course of history, leading to the king’s protection of the Jewish people and the downfall of their enemy.

Application: Like Esther, there may be times when we’re called to stand for righteousness, even when it’s uncomfortable or unpopular. We might face opposition or risk our own reputation, but God honors those who stand for what is right. We’re called to speak the truth, defend the oppressed, and bring light into dark situations. God can use our courage to impact those around us and bring about change.

4. Embracing God’s Providence and Timing
“The Jews established and made it a custom for themselves… that they would celebrate annually on the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month of Adar as the time when the Jews got relief from their enemies.” (Esther 9:27)

Esther’s story shows us God’s providence in action. Though His name isn’t mentioned once in the book, His presence and guidance are evident throughout. From Esther’s rise to queenship to the Jews’ deliverance, God orchestrated every detail. The celebration of Purim serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and timing.

Application: God’s timing is often beyond our understanding, but His plans are always perfect. Even when we can’t see Him working, we can trust that He’s moving behind the scenes. When we face our own “for such a time as this” moments, we can have faith that God is in control, guiding and providing for us in ways we may not yet see.

Conclusion: Esther’s story reminds us that God calls each of us to stand boldly for faith, justice, and righteousness. Her courage came from a place of deep trust in God’s plan, and she responded to her calling with faith rather than fear. As believers, we’re also called to take a stand, knowing that God is with us every step of the way.

Wherever God has placed us, let’s seek His guidance, choose faith over fear, and stand boldly for what is right. In doing so, we fulfill our purpose and bring glory to God, trusting that He will use our actions for His good purposes.

Closing Prayer: Lord, thank You for the example of courage You’ve given us through Esther. Help us to recognize the purpose You have for us and to embrace it with faith and strength. Give us the courage to stand for truth and justice, even when it’s difficult. Guide us, Lord, and help us to trust in Your providence. May our lives reflect Your love and bring honor to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
